Since exiting the corporate realm and starting up LWP a couple of years ago, I have been increasingly asked to take Senior Portraits and I have begun to really enjoy it. Recently I was asked to photograph not one, but two very sweet young ladies who happen to be twins. I quickly thought "Of course I will!" The decision was made to photograph Ashley and Kelli the same day, and grab some sisterly shots together as a bonus for the family.
There are some classic cars in the family, notably a Plymouth 'Cuda and an even more rare Superbird. The Superbird has a wing that applies 600 lbs. of downforce to keep the rear of the car down at high speeds. When I was asked to shoot both of the girls sitting up on the rear wing, I loved the idea, but being a car guy, (notably a Mopar one) I thought maybe this was a risky idea... What if we damaged this rare car? These girls are super light, but the wing wasn't really made to be a bench. The girls father Dave assured me that he has seen it done before in photos and to go for it. So, we took a bunch and it was memorable, and trust me when I say, no one else will have this same shot of their twin girls on the wing of a classic Superbird!
Kelli is a horse lovin' gal, so it was requested to take some shots of her and her horse April. There were so many wonderful shots of them together, that I found it difficult to narrow it down to a few to show here. When booking and arranging a Senior session, in addition to some nice outdoor environmental portraits, we always encourage them to shoot with their horse, their motorbike, their truck, guitar.... whatever it is they are into. It's what makes you unique so let it make your photos unique!
Besides a variety of poses and scenes, I like to render images in different color styles as well, like the B&W above and the muted color version below. It gives the customer a more diverse look to the final delivered session, and creatively it makes for some fun post production of images for me.
Of course, I take plenty of natural looking outdoor portraits. Almost all are done by blending available light and portable strobe equipment with light modifiers. I use natural settings of my choice or yours.... whatever we agree on doing. It's fun to think on my feet and see shot ideas happen as we go. Since there were two subjects on this day, we switched back and forth rather randomly. As one girl changed outfits, the other was photographed. I didn't want the girls to have any two shots alike so each was photographed in unique scenarios.
I had to flip a coin to decide who to show first in this article, and now it's sister Ashley's turn. You see, Ashley has been patiently waiting up until this point but it looks like she's ready to smoke the tires in the 'Cuda now. Wow, wouldn't THAT have been a great photo! Nevertheless, she absolutely wanted a photo with her favorite car. These two cars made this shoot a real treat for me. They both have 440's under the hood and they sound incredible, shaking the ground when they were started! I shot overall shots of Ashley and the car as well as some close-ups like the one below.
Got Lake? Or a Pond? We shot at their neighbors great pond and it provided many opportunities for a nice background. Bodies of water can be used to create a totally unique backdrop in different ways. Water can be used in a more obvious way with someone clearly sitting in front of it (below) or it can be thrown out of focus and abstracted like the shot above.
If I continued showing more of the great shots of these two photogenic young gals, I'd use up all of the bandwidth out there, so I must sign off now. This was a great shoot with a great family. It's one of the best pleasures in my job to work with great people.
